Microstructure and Dynamics of Wormlike Micellar Solutions Formed by Mixing Cationic and Anionic Surfactants

چکیده
Small-angle neutron scattering (SANS) and rheology are used to probe the wormlike micelles formed in mixtures of a cationic (cetyl trimethylammonium tosylate, CTAT) and an anionic surfactant (sodium dodecyl benzene sulfonate, SDBS). For a fixed composition of 97/3 CTAT/SDBS, the zero-shear viscosity η0 initially increases rapidly with surfactant concentration, but decreases beyond an intermediate concentration φmax. The solutions show a scattering peak in SANS and the height of the scattering peak also exhibits a maximum around φmax. These results are interpreted in terms of a maximum in the linear micellar contour length Lh at φmax, and suggest that the hydrodynamic and electrostatic correlation lengths reach an optimal ratio at this point. For a fixed total surfactant concentration, the viscosity η0 also reaches a maximum at an intermediate SDBS fraction. The decrease in η0 at high SDBS fractions is interpreted in terms of the polyelectrolyte nature of the micelles and the increased chain flexibility caused by the rising ionic strength of the solutions. An alternate possibility may involve a progression from linear to branched micelles with increasing SDBS content.

Wormlike Micelles Formed by Synergistic Self-Assembly in Mixtures of Anionic and Cationic Surfactants
Self-assembly in mixtures of cationic and anionic surfactants occurs synergistically because of attractive interactions between the oppositely charged headgroups. Here, such effects are exploited to obtain highly viscoelastic fluids at low total surfactant concentration. The systems considered are mixtures of the C18tailed anionic surfactant, sodium oleate (NaOA), and cationic surfactants from ...

متن کاملNovel Highly Flexible Wormlike Micelles Formed by Cetylpyridinium Chloride and Trioxyethylene Monododecyl Ether Surfactants
The impact of small nonionic hydrophobic molecule, trioxyethylene monododecyl ether (C12EO3), on the viscoelastic properties of aqueous solutions of cetylpyridinium chloride (CPC) is studied. As the C12EO3 concentration increases, the viscosity passes through a maximum. Dynamic rheological measurements revealed a comprehensive picture of how C12EO3 affects the different length scales in the ent...

متن کاملThe Formation of pH-Sensitive Wormlike Micelles in Ionic Liquids Driven by the Binding Ability of Anthranilic Acid
Wormlike micelles are typically formed by mixing cationic and anionic surfactants because of attractive interactions in oppositely charged head-groups. The structural transitions of wormlike micelles triggered by pH in ionic liquids composed of N-alkyl-N-methylpyrrolidinium bromide-based ILs (ionic liquids) and anthranilic acid were investigated. These structures were found responsible for the ...
